IN-Lite Magnesium Notebook with one full length expansion slot
Launch event
I was working for Kontron when the IN-Lite was launched, in Munich. The international sales force and distribution channel were all represented, and the product manager made quite a show of ‘the reveal’ pulling a sheet off the first production unit – to, it has to be said, tumultuous applause. Kontron had been pretty successful with the IP-Lite, but it had no battery option and was a big heavy lump.
I remember looking at the keyboard with its tiny trackball, and thinking it would be awkward to use. It was. The flaps that covered up the ports were at first ‘held in place’ by little stainless steel springs. They were rubbish. Later models got a more traditional hinge with pins and sockets; but even these were a bit fragile for such an otherwise beautifully put together machine. The pins slid in machined slots in the doors themselves and were sprung by tiny coil springs that would not have looked out of place in a watch.
Construction
The IN-Lite was made from a Magnesium alloy that was both very strong and very light. The main structure – flaps aside – was very well put together. The expansion slot was located between the keyboard and the display, and was accessible with the removal of a few screws.
The only downside of magnesium alloy turned out to be that it burns quite well. We were asked by a military customer to test it, and when ignited using a blow-torch, it burned really well. So well, we had to throw it out of a second story window into the parking-lot, in case we set off the building alarms. None ever ignited in normal use as far as I know; so it’s a bit academic to most people.
One other failing of the design was the built in handle. It was probably sourced from a third-party vendor, and it worked just fine if the load forces were kept perpendicular. It had lovely machined sliding hinges that looked beautiful. Unfortunately, yanking the handle upward when the unit sat on a desk (forces 90 degrees to the carrying direction) could cause the handle to split in half. This meant our service engineer had to go on-site to a large military customer and completely re-assemble and epoxy about 100 handles. All in all a nice product though.

This new rugged triple 24” display upgrade turns single screen laptops into multi screen workstations. The portable display converts a conventional single screen laptop into a 3-screen workstation with a 5760 x 1080 workspace using three 1920×1080 HD displays. The displays fold and lock together transport and storage
The display is laptop agnostic and will work with most laptop PCs & MacBooks running Windows O/S, Mac O/S or Linux. The laptop has to have enough sources of video output to drive the three displays or some extra USB-3 or USB-C ports that can drive a conversion cable available from the manufacturer. These work transparently to the user, and work really well.
When opened for use, there is more than 5 feet of horizontal display area and the outboard panels can tilt inward to provide the best viewing experience for the user. Each display has it’s own adjustments for brightness, contrast and color temperature to allow for exact matching of the three displays presentation.
When folded the display gets quite compact (for a triple screen 24” system) and will fit under an airline seat or in the overhead compartment. Overall dimensions closed are: 23”W x 16”D x 5”H. Weight is about 15lb.

Latches for transport
The triple 24” displays are locked together by spring-loaded latches. Both latches must be released to unlock the displays providing protection for accidental opening.

A “Pelican” style accessory case is available, but that means you’ll have to check the display with baggage. Although, the display will survive “airline-grade” baggage handlers without damage and the case adds a waterproofing and dustproofing feature to hauling it around the world. Another benefit to the case is that it can also hold your laptop, power adapter, cables, etc. The manufacturer supplies a case with a custom foam cutout to hold all the components mentioned above
Triple screen laptop mount bracket
An optional laptop mounting bracket is available that provides a mounting location for the user’s laptop and laptop power adapter behind the triple display system. It attaches to the rear of the main chassis and has adjustments to accommodate a variety of laptop sizes and thicknesses.
